Skiing in Gudauri, Georgia. What else is there to do?
-
This year we decided to shake up our usual ski routine and instead of heading to the European resorts we normally go to, we’re flying out to Georgia to ride the slopes in Gudauri. Partly because with the Olympics happening right now, all those familiar spots are drowning in crowds. Skiing is the number one reason we’re going, no question about that, but a trip is never just about the mountain. What else is there to actually do out there when you’re off the slopes?
Gudauri sits at around 2200 meters, so just the mountain scenery alone gives you plenty to work with off the slopes. Paragliding is huge there, you can go tandem even with zero experience and get views of the Caucasus that are hard to beat. Snowmobiling and off-piste snowshoeing tours are also pretty popular, some groups head out toward the Cross Pass area. The apres-ski scene in Gudauri has grown a lot over the past few years too, the resort has proper bars and lounges where the crowd stays lively well into the night.
Evenings in a ski resort can go in a lot of directions and Gudauri actually has a pretty decent casino scene going on. Georgia as a country has always had a relaxed stance on gambling, so there are proper licensed venues around, not some sketchy backroom setup. Right in Gudauri you can check out https://casinogudauri.ge/ . Slots, table games, the usual range you’d expect from a solid casino. After a long day on the mountain it honestly works pretty well as a way to wind down, grab a drink and try your luck for a couple of hours before heading back to the hotel.
